This so-called
Celtic whirligig is actually a cast copper alloy fastener from a Roman auxiliary
soldier's sword-belt, and was found at Dura-Europos in Syria (3rd century
AD). It neatly links my main cultural and period interests: the Iron Age
of Northern Europe; the Roman Empire; the Roman army; and the city of
Dura-Europos in particular.
